Does anybody know how long you are allowed to sit in front of a monitor before you must legally take a break and how long is the break?

Unless the Health & safety regulations (display screen equipment) 1992 has been superceded:

No, there is no law in place.

However, employers do have to pay for sight tests if a regular user

When I worked in Health & Safety, I thought there was some stipulation that you should have a 5 minute break away from a monitor for every hour worked?
yeah Kebab - that's recommended, but it's not a legal requirement.
