Radio Commentary For Football Games

My son has tried to access some football matches on the radio but has been unable to on some occasions yet others, using a different radio format, have managed. Is this a problem anyone else has encountered and can anyone recommend a radio that will be able to access the commentary?
I should say the radio he used was in the micro system

BBC are constantly advertising football on Radio 5 Live. I think you can only get it on a DAB radio (digital audio broadcast).
