Satellite Broadband

I have found a couple of answers regarding satellite broadband here but some of them were fairly old so I was looking for some more up to date information.

BT (who I have a lot of time for) have given us a quote for installation of a new line to a new-build property but (a) it means digging up the drive again after all the other utilities have already been placed there or (b) installing three poles to reach the property (and they have said that even when they are installed - if anyone objects within a certain period to their siting, they have to take them down again, even if they are on my land!) or (c) placing a cable across our neighbour's garden to reach our property from the nearest pole. Not certain if our neighbour would agree to this though.

So we are looking at satellite broadband/phone (not absolutely necessary to have a phone though)

DOes anyone have up-to-date experience with satellite broadband? Is it still (as per already posed questions here) slow, fairly pricey, large dish required (q:what about planning permission for a dish for it?) etc.

Any help would be appreciated

I'm afraid my information is old as well but as nobody else has answered yet, I will. We had it in the Yorkshire Dales. An enterprising local IT guy set up a satellite dish on top of a local barn circa 2002 and we paid something like £25/month but as more and more people joined the price got lower. It was down to below £20 when I left in summer 2005. And it worked fine, no trouble at all. I believe he has gone on to do the same in other dales. Hope this helps.
