I think i have made a big mistake. I was offered the above box free with free installation and persuaded - very nicely- that it was just what i needed. However I have a Smart TV and now find that with this box all I can do on my tv is access all the iplayers which i could do before and rent films which I do not want to do and pause and replay live tv which is sometimes useful. However i cannot now access all the other things that my smart tv gave me e.g. access to the internet and lots of available apps etc. Can I over ride this box or am i now stuck wiith less than i had before - please help

I don't see the problem. You say it was free, so you've lost nowt. You don't want, so all you do is remove it from the telly. Simple.
You should be able to switch from HDMI (TalkTalk) back to TV (Freeview) anytime you want to.
