i want to be able to tap the mousepad instead of the button to activate left click.

I am running XP Professional and have been to control panel, mouse settings and cant find anything to change this.

The button is really loud and its driving my girlfriend crazy!!

On my laptop, tapping the pad is much louder than pressing a button - it requires quite a 'thump' with a fingernail!!
You should not need to change anything. Tapping the touchpad should have the same affect as clicking the buttons. You can increase the sensitivity of the touchpad though if you have to tap it too hard to get a response. A very gentle tap is all that should be necessary. Go to Control Panel and Mouse Options.
Download the correct touchpad driver from the manufacturers website.
