For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.Tim - this was indeed the case with dial-up, but is not generally a problem with Broadband, because your Broadband "modem" does not dial your ISP. When your modem connects to the exchange, it sends your logon details (name and password) to a device at the exchange called a DSLAM, and from there to a RADIUS server, which determines who your ISP is. You will notice that broadband accounts always have logon names which look like eMail addresses - the part of the name after the '@' tells the system who your ISP is, which RADIUS server should authenticate you, and who should allocate an IP address to you.
If for example, you have a BT account, and were to put my Force9 username and password into your modem configuration, you would not need to make any other changes - you would still get internet access, however it would be Force9 supplying it rather than BT.
(You may however, run into problems with using your eMail, but this is because many ISP's insist on you being authenticated by them before they will allow you to access their mail servers, even though programs like Outlook allow you to have multiple eMail addresses.)
