A while back I was advised on Answerbank to use an ethernet network adapters as my desktop pc is not wireless enabled, and I wanted to do away with the long cable running to my pc.....which I am using at the moment, however these seem to be causing problems as the internet access keeps stopping..I got these so when my service provider VM,relocated my tv,top box and hub to the other side of lounge.,I could get rid of the cable.
So I had VM out today, supposedly to put the long ethernet cable back but he told me they don`t do them anymore...I even have the cable they left when doing the relocating but not the bits on each end,had to cut one off as it was running through a hole in the wall.He told me if I had had them he could have done it ...but they don`t have them !!!!
Does this mean I have to buy a new wireless enabled desktop to avoid the connection problem????
Or can I get someone other than my service provider..who cannot do it..to do it,if so,whom do I look for?
Not totally sure of the description. You had a cable with something on each end but VM cut it off ? Did they not get your permission to cut the end off your cable ?
So you presently have it working wirelessly, but it has issues and you wish to replace the cable. Correct ?
I'd be surprised if the socket isn't available on the VM kit for it. But if they have cut off the plug from the cable you'll need it put back on, or a replacement one put on.
Yes you are understanding me.They disconnected the cable from the back of my top box when they put a new hub(router).I had to cut the connector off to get it through the wall.I threw them away but kept the cable(I am a hoarder).
As I said, when I got them back out today, they informed me that they do not put or supply these cables anymore.
If you've got a 'normal' desktop PC then adding a wireless card is pretty simple, even easier is a WiFi dongle. I thought last time the problem was that you didn't have a wireless router but since you've had Virgin out I'm assuming you've got one of their superhubs. I imagine that the engineer meant that 'they' don't do the long ethernet cables any more, they're easy enough to get hold of on Amazon etc.
He said,if I go to Asda I can buy the cable ready fitted with the connectors and I would have to make the hole in the wall bigger so as to push it through(do not want to do this),plus I really did not want the cable at all but as the network adapters are causing problems thought would have to replace.
I asked him what do they do if a pc is not wireless enabled,he said Network adapters have to be used...oh,they do not provide these either!!!
Well if the cable you have is long enough, and the VM hub has the cable socket still, then you can get some nice person to buy & put the plug on, or go buy another cable.
Or as Fitzer says, you could always replace your present wireless set-up with one that works to the VM hub. But I think you may need a knowledgable person to help you sort the details.
I prefer a proper cable but given your circumstances maybe wireless is the way to go. Search for something to plug into your PC which has IEEE 802.11 compatibility.
Not convinced you need to be passing data over your main cabling. It might be an option but if the VM hub already receives/transmits WiFi then it seems a little pointless. Your PC will already be in range.
As mentioned, get a confirmation from one of the real experts but you would stick it where it fits, into the USB socket on your PC. The PC should recognise it and configure itself to use it, and then be able to contact the hub which already should be using IEEE 802.11 as its WiFi standard.
They are exactly what I use to get my fibre-optic broadband from the hall to the bedroom where my router is. I have no problems with them.
Can you expand on "my internet access keeps stopping"? Do you mean that every so-often you lose your connection to the internet for a short while? If so, how often is "every so-often" and how long is a short while?
Oldgeezer - I think you're on the wrong tack. Look at the adapters he bought. If I understand him correctly he hasn't converted his PC into wireless, he's used adapters to get the signal from his hub to his PC using the mains as his internet cable.
I can be using the net and then go to another window...no internet access!..,I then right click on the internet icon (bottom right of window) and run Troubleshoot Problems, that usually fixes it,,but if one is in a middle of a game which is why my son is complaining...it messes it all up.
