How Do You Access Voicemail On A Mobile Phone?

A little image, like the front of a pair of glasses, has appeared on my phone. I'm guessing this is an indication that there's a voicemail message. How to get to it?

Some clue as to the make and model of the phone would probably help Sandy :-)
On most non smartphones pressing and holding the 1 key would dial voicemail in the 'old' days

This is an ancient Nokia phone and, as you've suggested, pressing 1 has done the trick.
Apparently I may have been missold PPI.
