a free version of Word?

Word is a paid for product - any site offering a 'free' version is breaking the law and almost certainly going to fill your PC with malware.

Try Open Office instead

Thanks for the warning Dave. I was suspicious of the 'free' offers.

Yes openoffice is the way to go.
I've used Open Office for years, and it works well; but sometimes if you send someone a document created on it, they are unable to open it
brainiac, always save your document in the .doc format
All versions of Windows come with a basic Word Processor called WordPad.

I got it through my employers. It is way beyond my needs and pretty complicated. I don't even use any of it since having discovered Word Pad as mentioned by VHG ... It does everything I need.

It seems I had WordPad all the time without realising it!
