Stupid question i know but i want to take my clock on holiday using the battery back up but after putting brand new battery in i turn off the electricity the battery doesnt kick in , i cant think what im doing wrong or what i can do any differently! Any suggestions ?

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.Although you can't see it working (ie see the display) the battery is actually working the clock if it's like ours. When you plug it back in the clock will show the right time. So I think you will find it needs to be plugged in - the battery is only supposed to keep the clock "ticking along" till the electric returns.

I'm unsure what leaving a phone (presumably mobile) charging all night has to do with the OP. Nor why it is a concern.
Some mobiles will run sufficient that they turn themselves on when the alarm time comes up even though they were "off" at the time anyway. Why not just use the alarm on the mobile and if concerned simply leave it on, and not charge it overnight ?
