I have had a Gmail account for a number of years, but now, for no apparent reason Google regards my abbreviated email address as being different from the longer original.... Eg., @googlemail V @gmail.... Has anyone else stumbled on this? -It may pertain specifically to my security settings in MacOS 10+

Because of this I cannot sign in to Google Drive without getting "Google failed authentication"

I thought they offered the option to change googlemail to gmail?

Mine are gmail.

In the early days- it looked as if you could choose either without any trouble.
Not now.
When I first got mine they offered gmail.com then they tried to introduce a .co.uk, but someone had that domain name. Thus they introduced googlemail.co.uk

A few years later they introduced the option to change googlemail to gmail.
I too was given the option of going to gmail from googlemail but chose to stay with googlemail and actually still am and have had to make no change,
