Updating To Ios 8

My iPad is still running IOS 6

I have, until now, refused to update to 7 or 8 (I can't think of it as an "upgrade" because I consider both 7 and 8 to be unnecessary, loaded with bloat ware, and designed for the benefit of Apple and their advertisers, rather than we long suffering punters).

But now there are several Apps which I can't use unless I update.

I can't go to IOS 7 as Apple have stopped supporting it (no surprise there!).

So I have to go on to IOS 8.

If I do install IOS 8, will it affect any of the stuff on my iPad? (I mean existing Apps, files, photos, etc).

I don't store any of my stuff on the giant "gather information about all our users so that we can exert even more market control, even though we are continually being hacked and our storage is laughably unsafe" hard-drive-on-an-industrial-estate-in-America (or "the Cloud" as the sugar coating people like us to call it).

Should I update?

I have taken all upgrades on both iphones and ipads and never had any problems. I am on my third iphone and second ipad. Make sure you do a back up first.

I have done every update as it has become available the same as Woofgang. I have never had a problem. Make sure all your apps are up to date and close all your open files and then backup and update. The new stuff that has been added is only a good thing in my opinion.

iOS 7 was a major redesign and your iPad will look completely different and operate differently. Lots of apps work differently too. YouTube for example is a completely different app written by Google and has many shortcomings compared to the original iPad app.

iCloud is a free way to keep your computer backed up. It is up to you whether you use it or not, but if you do not, I hope you keep a copy of your iPad contents on a PC that is in a different place than where your iPad lives. Having no back up is rather foolish.

Why on earth would anyone want to upgrade to an old OS?

I would recommend having the ipad fully charged - I did an update whilst charging - and had to restore ipad from a backup.

I suspect that whilst applying the updat the charging circuits are not used - thus ipad went flat whilst installing firmware!

I had backed it up 1 week before, so only lost daily solar readings for that week!
