Touchpad

I have asked this before but am unable to resolve the issue. I have been running Win 10 for about 5 weeks now. I disable the touchpad but everytime I shut down it is automatically re-enabled on start up. This is becoming annoying. Any thoughts?

When you shutdown and restart do you have an external mouse connected or not?

Do you have the same issue when an external mouse is connected during startup?

Yes, I never remove the mouse.

Bit puzzled by this. When I go to Settings>Devices>Touchpad and Mouse
there is no Advanced settings.

I disabled the touchpad on my Toshiba Satellite Pro using the function button, which worked fine.

I also found that I could disable it at "Settings>Devices>Touchpad and Mouse>Additional Mouse Options/Device Settings
Then highlight Synaptics Touchpad and click Disable.

Both of these options work and are carried over between reboots. The advantage of using the function button, is that if for any reason the mouse fails, you can easily re-enable the touchpad.

Incidentally, there is no need to click Apply before clicking OK.
OK means "apply changes and close the window"
Apply means "apply changes and leave the window open"

If you run msconfig, can you see the touchpad software in the start-up tab?

I can't be sure as to whether this might disable all pointer/mouse software, so be sure you can navigate back to ms config using only the keyboard.

One windows 7+ this likely only means being able to:
1. hit start key and type msconfig and then return to run msconfig.
2. use alt+tab to navigate loaded tabs
3. tab down to the disabled touchpad option and reenable.

As long as you can do that, it's worth having a go?

What is the make / model number of your computer?

Sorry, by advanced settings I meant additional mouse options. I do exactly as you say but it defaults back to enable everytime on start up. This didn't happen with W8 or Vista. Might be a problem with my PC, but then again it worked previously. I guess I'll just have to live with it. Strange it should work for you but not for me. Thanks for all advice anyway.

I can't give you the answer but I had the same problem, 'someone' posted a solution to the dilemma on a thread a few weeks ago and it is brilliant.

I eventually ticked a box that said the plugging in of USB devices disabled the touchpad.

I will try and find the thread.

Jackdaw - it was on your last post regarding this.

I did what HC said but at the end I ticked an option to disable when USB (Mouse) is used. It has been great. I touch-type and also have shaky hands so I kept hitting the f*** touchpad. It was driving me nuttier than usual.

I've just done that. We'll see what happens when I shut down and restart.

No joy. Restarted and again it re-enabled. I tried again ticking that box and got a pop-up saying the touchpad had been disabled but it hasn't been! I give up, I'll just have to go through the rigmarole of disabling every time I switch on. It's just because if I lay something on the touchpad funny things happen, like the right click box options appear or the font size changes.

Wolf, that was my thread. It is just another way of accessing settings; the result is the same.

You could try un-installing the Mouse Pad Drivers and hope that win 10 doesn't auto reinstall.

Try:
- RIGHT-click 'Windows Start' icon
- Select 'Device Manager'
- Click and expand 'Mice and other pointing devices'
- Locate the Touchpad device name and RIGHT-Click on it
- Select 'Uninstall' and follow the prompts to carryout the uninstall process.
- Reboot your Computer
- On startup of Win 10 if it offers you the option to re-install, decline it.

Thanks Pinky. Did that and restarted and the damn thing automatically re-installed without giving me an option. Time to call it a day but thanks for all advice.
