Not unless you tell it to wake-up to perform the backup task.

Assuming you are running Windows 7, if you have set up a scheduled backup in Windows 'Backup and Restore', it will have been added to the Windows Task Scheduler service. From there you can set the option to wake up to perform the backup as follows:-

- Open 'Scheduler' via 'Windows Start>Control Panel>System and Security>Administrative Tools>Task Scheduler'
- select the 'Task Scheduler Library' in the left pane
- Drill down through the 'Microsoft>Windows>WindowsBackup' folders.
- With the last folder selected you will see the "Automatic Backup" task in the top right pane
- double-click on this to open the 'Properties' window, then select the "Conditions" tab and check “Wake the computer to run this task".
- Click OK and you're done.

Hope that works for you.

Thanks pinkyboy I've done that .Will I now have to wait till next weekend to see if it comes in on cue?
If your backup schedule is set as a weekly process with its next startup time bing the weekend, then the answer is yes.

If you want to test it before next weekend, then create a new backup schedule, including the 'Wake the computer to run this task' setting, to commence at what ever time is convenient to you and just before it is due to start, put you computer to sleep and wait to check if it wakes and performs the backup!

Don't forget to redo your weekend schedule if that is your preferred option.
