A friend of mine is to be admitted as an inpatient for medical treatment

Is it possible to to access Internet while in Hospital using her own personal Wifi access?

no, but she could use her data allowance as long as reception is good.
You have to be within a short range of your router to get a wifi connection.

Way too far. It usually only extends a metre or two from your house.
Using a mobile with a data connection should work, as long as mobiles are allowed. You can even set up the mobile handset to act as a WiFi for other devices. It's known as tethering.
I'm in hospital right now and connected to the hospital's guest wi-fi network. Don't know if they all have this now, but it must be worth a quick phone call to find out.
