Cd/dvd Writer?

If you have a USB port then it should read/write DVDs ok. I'm assuming that the netbook operating system will recognise it. What are you running ?

good question, i have windows 8.1
now i'm not sure if its 64 or 32 bit, any idea how i can find out?

You can get details of your operating system (32 or 64 bit) by clicking on the Start button and then right-clicking on Computer.

What do need an optical drive for anyway? Is it to play CDs and DVDs or simply to load programs that you've got on DVDs?

I wanted to check that you actually needed a DVD drive. (Some people, for example, buy one just to install their printer's software onto their netbook, not realising that they can download the software instead).

The drive in your link would be fine but it's over double the price that I'd pay for such a drive. Here's what I'd go for:
