is this what i need for my netbook, as it doesn't have a cd/dvd compartment?

If you have a USB port then it should read/write DVDs ok. I'm assuming that the netbook operating system will recognise it. What are you running ?

I wanted to check that you actually needed a DVD drive. (Some people, for example, buy one just to install their printer's software onto their netbook, not realising that they can download the software instead).
The drive in your link would be fine but it's over double the price that I'd pay for such a drive. Here's what I'd go for:
