Only up to a point. Anyone not dealing with the public, nor interfacing with counterparts in a different company, should be able to wear anything within reason. Anyone acting at the public face of their company should be accepting of reasonable requests.
It is debatable whether an insistence on wearing something that could cause injury is alright though. It's not a case of not going for the job, it's a case of the position should not be demanding something unreasonable.

Yes, a dress code is part of the job, but we’ve had this conversation before. Nicola Thorp was asked to wear heels between 2 and 4 inches high. 2 inch heels are not ‘stilettos’. Women like her – and that air hostess - get on my pip. If they don't like it they should go elsewhere and leave the job open for someone who would like to do it. Fuss over nothing.
