OK guys, thanks.
Had broadband fitted yesterday and I switched all my plugs off last night (force of habit).
Would it harm my modem/internet connection in any way by switching power off?
If you turn your broadband router off every day then you probably never let it reach it's optimum speed. A broadband line goes through a process called "training" after being connected. The line & router will start to communicate at a fairly low speed and, if stable for long enough, will increase this in stages over a period of 2-3 days until it reaches the maximum stable speed for your line. If you turn your router off every day then this process starts again everyday and you'll never get the best out of your line.

wot he said ^^

Thank you Baldric. Never heard of 'training' but that makes sense.
Just got back on broadband after many years, with a new computer so its all new to me again.
Thanks
Question Author
So even if my (new) lappy is off, as long as my modem is on,it will keep 'training'?

Yes, it will
I don`t understand about modems and training but I work away and I never turn off the router when I go to work. I do turn the laptop off though.
I was also going to add what Baldric said, a router takes a few days to settle to optimum speed when new, your BB provider usually tells you that when you get a new router. Don't switch it off.
Had a power surge a couple of days ago which fused all the lights
Laptop been running better ever since
Question Author
wheres best answer button gone??
Was just going to give Baldric BA and all i can see is 'report' buttton.
When I first got my laptop, I used to switch the router off. When I turned it on again, there was no change and turning it off didn`t make any difference

Found it..
;-)

Is it just AB thats a bit slow, or is it my lappy?
Youtube seems fast enough??
//When I first got my laptop, I used to switch the router off. When I turned it on again, there was no change and turning it off didn`t make any difference//

That's because you never gave it a chance to get up to optimum speed.
Right. So why did I not notice any difference. Isn`t turning the router off the same as resetting it when there is a problem? That takes about 5 mins or less for the system to work as normal
Question Author
How long do you suggest that I keep my lappy on for then?
It only makes a difference to the speed and unless you're downloading HD movies etc you probably wouldn't notice on a day to day basis.
