Daughter recently bought secondhand a John Lewis tall larder fridge which was a dream until this weekend when the fridge lost its capacity to cool and the temperature reads.. 12 degrees on the display. If I can supply the model and serial number could anyone tell me if it is possible to replace the part that has packed up. Daughter intends to dump this lovely fridge without checking if it is easily mended without incurring huge call out charge. I hope a fridge repair expert will read this and advise before it is too late to save it. Many thanks for looking!

where is model and serial number
Question Author
Jennyjoan it will be on the rear usually or on a plate inside door depending on the make.
A fridge is basically a compressor in a metal case. If the compressor has gone wrong or leaked it's gas, which is the most likely cause, there is not much hope of repair. It could be a simple fault like a loose connection but I can't see any way to find out unless a repairman actually tests it.
But no one knows which part needs replacing. I think it needs an expert to look at it.
Call out charges are not that huge.
Call out charge is normally £50 you can get another 2nd hand fridge for that.
could be a faulty thermostat some are cheap to buy, vid on how to
not your fridge, but they are more or less the same

^ Yes I agree it could be a faulty thermostat but you need to know if it is the thermostat or not. I don't see how you do that without getting an engineer to look at the Fridge and see where the problem is, so that means a call out fee and then the cost of repairs on top of that, all in all cheaper to get another fridge as it was second hand anyway.

I have just learned that the cooling component has not completely stopped working - merely the temperature on the display reads 11 and 12 instead of the previous 5 so food is coldish but not as cold as it should be. She is going to tell me model and serial number so if I post this it may help someone advise me as to how to look into it further before incurring specialist costs.
^ looks like it is a thermostat fault then.
Can you put a thermometer in the fridge so you can read the internal temperature? It could just be the display temperature is wrong.

Thanks for all the advice. I am going to visit today so will note the model and serial number. If it turns out to be the thermostat and I can find out where to buy a replacement is this something I could fit myself. I am quite an enthusiatic DIYer!
Check the door seal too.
