Nothing. The car would continue to run as normal. Try it yourself - get out of the car with the engine running. You'll probably get a message or some other kind of warning but the engine won't stop.
If you're ever stuck, there is one key that covers all uses in such situations.

A ***.

Already getting my coat......
Blimey.....does the site filter not allow the nickname for an itinerant traveller that rhymes with crikey?
Ah, but could you get it to start again if it stalled or you parked it up ?
Certainly not OG. The key, like a physical key, is only required to start the car. If you could remove the ignition key without turning off the engine (and I could on my old Ford Anglia) you would be in the same position.

The car has engine cut -off when idling ,would that re-start?
You will not be able to restart, the car will just tell you 'Key not present'

Thanks everyone.I'll just better hope he behaves himself!
I would guess that the car would restart itself in those circumstances Mexican because you haven't turned off the ignition. Why don't you try it; stop the car on your drive or in the road, hand your key to someone outside it, wait till the engine turns itself off and then try to set off again.
My car is too old to have this silly "engine off in traffic stop" system, so I can't try it for you.
Google it. There are lots of YouTube videos about it.
