most combination tv/dvd are only to play dvd's..as said you will need to connect some kind of recorder.. hard drive digital... something that will tune in..

You need to buy a recorder, a PVR. There are plenty available such as the Humax.

Many TV sets incorporate a recording facility, whereby you use a USB memory stick to keep your stored programmes on. It doesn't necessarily have to be an expensive set to offer that facility. (My £99 cheapo from Asda can do it).
DVD players won't record anything but, obviously, DVD recorders can do.
If you'll tell us the MAKE AND MODEL of each device we might be able to provide more useful answers though!

no i didn't, i am something of a technophobe, so don't understand the finer parts of technology. the salesman didn't suggest it, so i went off and had the tv, separate dvd player delivered paying for the installation. believing you could immediately record turned out to be untrue. so i bought a separate hard drive, freeview box, call it what you like and had to have that installed as well. costing another 200 quid, which was a bit of a surprise. still i am also having to work out how the control works, so happy days.........or not.
