If you could borrow a modem and filter you can test if the problem still persists with the replacements. If so you would need to request a line check to see if the fault lies there.

Hi yellowjohn, has it been raining a lot in your area?? this sounds like a problem with moisture on a set of connectors somewhere on your line but it could be anywhere on the line from the exchange to your house or even in your house.
The normal voltage on the line is 45vdc and this may not jump across a damp connection but when it rings the voltage is higher 90vac and this might jump a damp connection and 'short circuit' the line making the modem drop the connection.
Have you tried swapping your filter for a new one? Could just be that the filter is bust. If that doesn't resolve the issue call BT (152 i think it is for residential) and get them to check the PSTN line. if the PSTN (voice) side of the line is OK then I'd recommend that you call your ADSL supplier technical helpdesk. They will be able to run external tests on your ADSL signal part of the line and if necessary raise the fault with BT Wholesale. But be warned - if it gets this far I'd be prepared for the BT shunt - PSTN saying its not their issue and your ADSL supplier saying its not theirs. Who is your ADSL supplier? Post back and let me know what heppens - I used to work for BT Broadband Tech, have seen this happen before and I can give you some further advice if you need it. Good Luck!!!!
