Am I In The Stone Age ?

I was told yesterday that I am in the Stone Age because I use Windows 7.

Having recently managed to get my equally elderly wife to desist from trying to open apps by pointing the mouse at the screen I am reluctant to expose her to the trauma of having to get to grips with Windows 10.

I am comfortable with my Windows 7 Professional and it does everything I want in fine style, so is the accusation fair ?

I'm happy enough to stick with Windows 7.

I know that some of my older software, which runs under 'Compatibility Mode' in Windows 7, won't run in Windows 10. To replace it all with Windows 10 versions would cost many hundreds of pounds. Further, some of my peripherals, such as professional-level film scanners and graphics tablets, almost certainly won't have Windows 10 drivers available. So, if I'd accepted the 'free' upgrade from Microsoft it could have cost me the better part of a thousand quid to get back to where I was before (with no real benefits).

Sharon's asked me to repost the link about stopping all but the most essential of Windows 10 updates. The trick is to tell Windows that you're using a metered connection (whereby you pay for the data you use), even if you're not:

I have been using Windows almost since it first came out, and I think Windows 7 is probably the best version of Windows they ever made.

And according to figures I saw on the web about 40% of Windows users still use Windows 7 (very hard to get an accurate figures due to different companies measuring it in different ways)

I bet there are THOUSANDS of companies all over the world still using Windows 7 and many probably wont move for years.

In fact it is amazing how many BAD versions of Windows there have been - Windows ME, Windows Vista, Windows 8.

Seems Microsoft have to ship a bad version (such a Vista) then correct it all in the next version (Windows 7)

Maybe that is why they have said Windows 10 will be the last release ever, they will just keep updating it.

I've never had any problems with Widows Vista.As I said, it does everything I want it to do.

It just took them ages to get it right.

Basically when it shipped it was not ready.

Microsoft had got in a right mess with their Windows development at that time (2001 to 2006) and tried to make some major changes to Windows, then they realised it was going to take too long and so they had to start again.

But then Microsoft marketing began to put pressure on them to ship a Windows product as it had been 6 years without a new version of Windows.

So the shipped what they had (Vista) and then spent the next couple of years fixing all the errors and changing much of the product.

I know because I went out and bought Vista when it came out.

I can only repeat what I've said. I've never had any problem with it. It does everything I want it to do.

I agree with the others. I still use Windows 7 and find it is the best version they have produced in a long time. My Mum uses Vista which I am not so keen on and my work uses Win 8 which I put up with but don't really like that much. Win7 does everything I need it to and it does it well. Why change?
