I sometimes get that on an iPad, but it's okay on a desktop.
You need to change some settings.

By default gmail will tag your messages as primary, social, promotions etc. You change this undet the cog wheel as Configure inbox.

Your mail will also be grouped as Conversations. You can turn this feature off when viewing the webmail, but not on the gmail app.
There’s an ‘all mail’ tab in Gmail which shows.......all mail. It also lets you swipe left and click / tsp ‘delete’ which the Inbox doesn’t (for some reason).
Click / tap
