Is the laptop picking up, and showing, the internet connection that is being utilised by the other devices?

Togo, yes.
Suggestion 1: Check that you've not got the Caps Lock on.

Suggestion 2: Turn it off and turn it on again. (Yes, I know that sounds a bit facetious but it's amazing how often it works!)

Suggestion 3: Reset the TCP/IP stack. (Don't worry - it's much easier than it sounds! I've done it countless times to solve wi-fi connection problems):

I take it that it does if you have got as far as entering "password". This password. Do you mean the wifi key? Does the laptop and router have a wps feature?(you can enable it on most laptops) If so press the wps button on the touter and send your laptop on a wifi search with wps enabled.

Have tried that. Must say am connected at present via Ethernet cable, albeit a short one.
Hmmm. Strange that. Just having a ponder on whether to US router runs on a weird bandwidth that could possibly(just possibly) require a driver for the laptop to access it.
Have you tried the troubleshooter in the Network and Internet settings?
