Avast Anti-Virus Problem

I have the free version of Avast anti-virus installed on my computer, but the recent problem that I am now experiencing is the fact that everyday I switch on my computer a window pops up telling me to close my computer down, and it gives me a choice to postpone it for a number of time periods, I generally tell it to postpone until Next Week but sometimes longer, but all to no avail, it still appears the next day.

I have been advised to close down the programme and reinstall it, but I am not sure how to do this or if there are some difficulties in carrying out this operation, can anyone help me out please?

Perhaps it would be best to change my antivirus programme, any suggestions of a good free one?

avast is a resource hog, there are others avira bitdefender etc
i use eset myself, but it's not free.
