Online Map For Sticking Pins In

If I wanted to, I could do this with a paper map, stick it to my wall, and get some map pins, which I could stick into the map and say 'That was where my relatives lived'.

But I'd rather do it on-line, with a downloadable map, so that I can send the result to the (few) interested parties who aren't local.

Is there any such thing on the market? I need a fairly big map of West London, and no, Google Maps doesn't really fit the bill - at least I can't bend it to my will. Is there a way?

However I'd be tempted to create a base map as a jpeg image by using Google Maps or OpenStreet Map and the Windows Snipping Tool. Then I'd use a DTP program (or possibly an image editor) to add markers onto it.

Thanks Chris, I’ll try the Google way, but might end up (as you describe) with a hybrid version.
