New External Drive Plays Dvd's But Not Cd's .......

........ as per title.

My in-built CD/DVD drive recently gave up on me, so I've bought an external one. I've just plugged it in and it'll play DVD's but won't recognise CD's .... what gives??

I've tried several CD's, so I know the problem isn't with the CD itself. I double click on the D Drive and it just prompts me to insert a disc and the CD tray opens. I right click on it - it's empty, even though there's an original audio CD inserted. I've tried opening VLC player - it just tells me the drive is empty.

Anyone any ideas please, before I contact the seller??

I'm using Win 10 and this is the item in question:

Undure. Are these pre recorded CDs ? Maybe a format type mismatch ?
+- RW
Are the CDs one of those format types ?

They're original (not copies) audio CD's, so I'd assume they'll play in virtually any CD player.
Ah. Sounds faulty. Seller has a good feedback. Worth asking.
I THINK, but am not sure, that CDs and DVDs use different lasers. In other words, there are two lasers in your machine, one for CDs and the other for DVDs; it seems that your CD laser is faulty.
Have you got Windows Media Player App installed?
Try that

//// Have you got Windows Media Player App installed ////

Already tried that, then I tried VLC - no joy :(
You referred to your other half's laptop in your previous post about your laptop CD player. Have you tried your new external player on your other half's laptop? Success or failure on that will point to the player or your own laptop being the problem; I'm beginning to suspect your laptop.

Good idea bhg ..... However, I just tried it in my missus' laptop and still the same problem persists. It plays DVD's but not CD's ..... looks like a faulty drive :(
