How Do They Afford This?
3 Answers
We have just returned from a night in a Britannia hotel in Bromsgrove.
It cost us £69 per couple. For that We had a three course meal costing £20 each. An inclusive bottle of wine £16.95. That left £12.05 to cover the cost of two all you can eat breakfasts and the room. It wasn't just a room, we had a suite, a large lounge with tv and a fridge, bedroom with king size bed and another tv. Also a bathroom.
The hotel had a spa as well.
It really was a fantastic hotel
We combined it with a ride on the Severn railway from Kidderminster to Bridgenorth.
It's a very pleasant couple of days away.

A £16.95 bottle of wine is probably bought in for around a fiver. So that's cost them £13 quid. An all-you-can-eat breakfast doesn't cost more than £3 per head for the ingredients, so that brings the total up to £19. That still leaves them £50 to pay their expenses (such as laundry costs) and staff wages.
Britannia Hotels work on a basis of a low profit margin per person but ensuring that all of their rooms are always full.
I've stayed in this one (courtesy of the company I was contracting for):

The locals in the pub up the road all groaned when I told them where I was staying but I was quite impressed with what customers got for their money.
That was 6 years ago. I met some people who were also staying in that hotel, who'd travelled from the north of England with National Holidays for a 3-day break. Their deal gave them return coach travel, half-board in the hotel for 3 nights (with all-you-can eat breakfasts, a good evening menu, free entertainment each night and a bar selling drinks at prices that were only a half of pub prices), local coach trips, plus a trip across to France on the ferry. All for £99 per person.
I wish National Holidays (who use lots of Britannia Hotels) offered coach tours from my part of the country. I'd love to go on one!
