I've got an HDMI splitter, one port in, two ports out. No switching, just sits there and delivers, no problems.

Now I have the need for a splitter which takes TWO inputs, with a single output. Plenty available (Amazon etc)., but all seem to be switched, i.e. you have to physically push a button before changing from one input to the other.

Is this a technical problem, i.e. am I chasing something that can't exist? If not, any clues as to locating an HDMI splitter, two input ports, one output, no switches!

Thanks.

Well, if it takes 2 inputs to 1 output that would not be a splitter would it? Either you would need some highly complex circuitry to combine the 2 input signals, or some way of indicating which of the 2 signals should appear at the output.
I think you gotto have a switch.
You might find a box of electronics that passes the one with a signal, or defaults to one if both inputs have a signal. Might take a web search or two.
ebuyer.com sell several HDMI switches - some are automatic, some are remote control. Have a look on theit website and search for HDMI switch.

Right-ho. I didn't want to burden you with too much detail... but you'll need to know that both signals wouldn't be going through to the TV at the same time. I need a 'monitoring' device (i.e. a small TV) in order to see what's on a DVD player, and the same on an adjacent set-top box, but not simultaneously. (I use the stb exclusively for radio, so the TV isn't 'watched', but I still need some sort of TV monitor to see what I'm doing!

I suppose I'm going to have to settle for one of the remote-control versions, although it adds one extra 'move' - in that when I insert a certain DVD, I'll have to use the remote to switch the HDMI splitter to that channel.

I was trying to eliminate moves, by (e.g.) getting shot of an elderly CD player, and using the DVD player instead, but the CD player at least had a rudimentary display on the front, whereas using the DVD player means I need the external screen.

It was easier 70 years ago.
