Could It Be My Computer

renewed my contract with EE, and they promised and delivered a new router and installed it for free, which was good. Only thing is the speed seems
as slow and takes a full 5 minutes or more to open anything.
i have a relatively good but old computer could this be the reason everything is slow..

they did the tests when i had a a failure, the router died and i had to phone them up to ask why i had lost connectivity. I confess i don't know whether he did a test on the day, i presume so, but i was on the balcony watching his vehicle, the wardens are always around.

yes they promise fast speed, i can't remember what it was but they did say that everything would speed up now. i wonder as my computer a Dell Inspiron runs windows 7, that could be the main problem.

I found the router I received (free) from Virgin to be worse that useless, my internet was slow and restricted, certainly not what I had paid for! I bought my own router and it has been no problem ever sine.

its still a good make/model and i would be loathe to have to buy a new one at this stage. As i don't have the funds, or the knowhow how to transfer all the gubbins from one computer to a new one.

i confess i am not computer literate and find that if someone tells me the speeds will be fast then i expect that to happen and not wait for ten minute for firefox of other apps to load.

those speeds are fast enough - 3 times what I'm getting. could be your machine but seems odd if it was ok before.

If you have an "ordinary" line ie, not upgraded to fibre, then those speeds are acceptable. It's worth doing the speed check every now-and-again, particularly if you feel it is running slowly. If you download videos or watch catch-up TV on your computer the speed is low but if all you do is AB, GOOGLE etc it should be adequate.

was upgraded to fibre, and no its been slow forever. I pay a small fortune, in my eyes for line rental, broadband and some calls and could do with this being a bit more speedy.

Dell Inspirons are normally fitted with Broadcom or the like wireless cards, assuming you are using a wireless cconnection, which arent as good as the comparable Intel card. Changing the card is relatively easy with the usual youtube video to look at and then just load the latest software and you should see a significant increase. The cards are about £14. If you care to name your particular model / number I can identify your current card and the best reasonably priced replacement.

bhg, use this for AB, google, shopping on line and not much else, i don't work now, so no need for it to be work related stuff, but i am getting a bit annoyed when it is so slow to kick off.

If you've been upgraded to fibre those speeds are poor; you should get 2 or 3 times the download speed. It could be that your new router is faulty (I had a new router from TalkTalk which gave me problems and they replaced it without question). Get on to EE and complain.

its wireless, and yes i think i should be getting faster speeds. thought maybe as the computer is getting old, like me, that it was at fault. i couldn't tell you the first thing about it, but its slow, that's all i know.
