He appears a straight honest type with a sense of humour and also duty. He has had a troubled domestic tragedy but did his duty in the house.
Both he and Betty Boothroyd have both stated that they hoped things would change in the House and the world will not see it again as it had been over the last several years. Lol. If that wasn't a barbed criticism of 'bent bercow' I don't know what is. Good luck to the Gentleman. I reckon he will provide a refreshing sea change .

He seemed normal, quiet and not up himself at all . A welcome change from the show business wanabe that has fortunately gone. And regardless of what some think Bercow was not impartial. Horrible little man with Napoleon syndrome!

Bercow was despised as speaker long before the Brexit referendum. They tried to get rid of him & unfortunately failed. Thoroughly unpleasant character IMV. (& I realise that being "nice" isn't necessary or even desirable in that job but there are degrees)

Who takes care of the constituent's issues , of a speaker - presumably he/she has not got time for surgeries etc - or have they ?

Lindsay Hoyle is a Lancashire lad, which (of course) means he is grounded. He is tall enough not to have any 'little man' hang-ups and he certainly does not appear to have the ego of the previous speaker. Or much of an ego at all, for that matter. He will most likely do the job quietly, fairly and efficiently. I think the 'House' has done something right - for a change - and they are to be congratulated in their choice.

You are quite correct, being 'nice' is not a prerequisite of the role.

But being professional, unbiased, fair, non-interfering, non-political, and correctly behaved are - none of which features were evidenced by the previous incumbent, and I am sure Sir Lindsay will return the role of Speaker to the correct level of respect and decorum that its history and importance deserves.

I had hoped that Harriet Harman would get the job, but she withdrew.
I don’t know much about Hoyle, but he’s got to be better than than the weasel Bercow.

I also liked John Bercow.
And I like Sir Lindsay also.
I’m sure he’ll be an excellent replacement. He’s been a deputy for long enough.
Not sure I’d want to be too obsessed with taming the “bear pit” as he promises.
Generally debates are very civilised. It’s the dispatch box exchanges that get tasty sometimes.
We are a long way from the brawling, baying politicians of some countries.
And equally we’re a lot more “true to life” than the nodding dogs in other parliaments.
