They've spent 2 years to determine that! PMSL I could have told them that on day one.
"not programmed for jaywalkers" - well I'll go t' foot of our stairs!

Agree, TTT....having driverless cars is complete madness, and the idea of them on today's roads makes me angry at the stupidity of it.

Some shocking errors reported there. You'd think they'd test for some of that stuff in a simulator.
Yes but the point is that the specific flaws have now been identified. The biggest one being employing designers who can't correctly define nor understand the scope of the task given them. Pedestrians do cross roads. People don't always do things sensibly. In fact it's getting worse as authorities create an, 'I don't need to care, if I'm injured or killed it'll be the other person's fault', attitude by limiting normal activity for all, citing safety as an excuse. Many just stroll out slowly, casually, instead of looking and hurrying to get across the danger zone.

we can't program a robot to make a cup of tea, how are they ever going to drive a car? Until there is a sea change in software we cannot have driverless cars.

they'll never happen yogi, lots of people who have no clue about IT think they can. That's a passing phase.
A car doesn't care in the slightest, if a person is in the way. If there are faults in programming, it will now down anyone, unlike a human. Dangerous idea.

I would have thought the "software designers do it better than other people" school took a fatal beating with the Boeing 737 Max affair where the software designers deliberately set out to counter the Driver's actions because "they knew best".

Apparently not.
