Gmail Emails Not Showing Up On Iphone

Other half’s emails randomly disappeared from his inbox this morning. No idea how or why. Loads of deleted emails from years ago also reappeared in his deleted items. He logged into gmail on the laptop and they still weren’t showing up. Followed all the suggestions and finally found the link to recover emails. They’re now all showing (absolutely everything!) in the inbox while looking on the laptop, but not all are showing on the iPhone. I deleted his account and added it back - nothing. Also downloaded the gmail app which is now showing some of the recovered emails but not all.

Can anyone help me understand what’s going on and how to put it right please?
