In which case, I would imagine all she needs to do is write to her bank instructing them to cancel whichever it is in order to stop any further payments to AOL.
Always put these things in writing and keep copies - then you have some evidence, rather than relying on trying to remember when you made phone calls and who you spoke to.
On the website - www.aol.co.uk - there is a number for general enquiries. It is 0870 320 2020
Would check with them that you haven't signed up for a minimum term contract. If so, you would be liable to pay even if you no longer had a computer.
So long as this isn't the case, you can ask them to cancel the account and cancel the direct debit at the same time.
It isn't a good idea just to cancel a direct debit as, if a company thinks you owe them money, they are going to chase it up. It is better to deal with them direct and then cancel the direct debit as a back up.
Forgot to say - they are open from 8am until midnight, 7 days a week and can also be contacted via e-mail at [email protected] (if you want to have written evidence of writing).
The website also says you can cancel membership by signing into AOL and using the AOL Keyword: CANCEL
This makes no sense to me - being a non-AOL customer - but might make sense to you cazdee.
Good luck.
Given that she no longer has a computer, it'll be a bit difficult to log on to AOL and cancel it that way.
With that in mind, I'd give AOL a ring on this free number and cancel it that way. She should get some kind of confirmation or reference number. AOL will also be able to check for themselves when she last logged on and could use this as evidence that she'd cancelled it before now but knowing AOL they'll say that the payments are valid and you're not getting a refund.
I'd imagine they'd ask for the old cancellation reference number to confirm it was cancelled before - if you don't have it then you have no evidence that you did cancel rather than just stop using AOL. Personally, I'd say that I cancelled it over the phone ages ago, they can confirm this by checking when she last logged on and she'd like a refund.
If she has a recurring payment by debit/credit card the speak only to AOL, your card provider should be left well alone. If you have a Direct Debit, cancel it with the bank in addition to speaking to AOL.
Very true Stevie - but her Mum obviously has a computer or else she couldn't be writing here!!!!!!!
It was just that Genesis advised putting things in writing which is why I also included the e-mail address.
OK, so she wouldn't be able to go to the AOL site and log-in but that may prove useful to someone else in a similar situation!!!!!!
I was thinking mostly of the ability to log in to AOL which would be gone by now so I have that in my defence.
Also, whether it's a sales line or not, they may transfer you rather than having to dial an 0870 number.
Failing that, there's always
http://www.saynoto0870.com/
who imply that you can use an 0800 number.
Finally, my name's Stevie. Thanks for listening, you've been a great audience :-)
