My OHs employer gave her a new laptop. Its a HP 440g7. Anyway according to google its would've cost us around £1000+
My question is why is it so expensive? I ask because we've never spent more than £300 on a laptop.

speed, memory, internal storage, robustness of casing, screen quality general durability, post purchase support (which will cost more for a business machine) just off the top of my head
Graphics cards can be hugely expensive. They type of battery will add to the cost.
Really there is no comparison between a £300 laptop and a £1k plus laptop.
A cheap laptop is fine for sending emails, browsing the web, Facebook and YouTube especially if you are only going to be using at home for short periods.
most laptops are miles too much of everything for most users. My standard advice for anyone wanting a new laptop (unless they have specialist needs) is to find the cheapest one you can in Tesco and then buy it from EBay, amazon etc if it's cheaper. For most people, memory, disc space, speed etc is irrelevant these days. 99.9% of PCs are used to surf the net, send emails and create the odd word/excel doc.
You can buy this model at just over £750 from the HP store on line.
You do get what you pay for in this case.
HP 440 G7 ain't a grand anyway:

It's a nice machine but way too much for, as Barry says..."..... sending emails, browsing the web, Facebook and YouTube especially if you are only going to be using at home for short periods. "
what are you trying to say by posting that link?
TTT, that machine is available in many different specs. The top spec with the latest i7 processor (the one in your link is an i5) and graphics card is well over a grand.
This is what I'm using right now:

yeah fair enough barry but even the base machine is way over specced for most.
I agree, most users don't need a machine like that
This is for work though. All our staff are issued with expensive HP laptops - but then they have to cope with far more use and memory than a cheaper one just for home use.
If her employer uses an IT support company they would have sourced it. Often they work in partnership with certain suppliers and get a percentage of the cost.
It would also depend what it needs to be used for.
sorry, prudie, are you taking aver this post from piggy? are you the same person?
Exactly, Prudie. A business machine is going to cost a lot more than a basic one
Obviously Prudie is not piggynose. Prudie has an expensive HP business machine, piggynose has a £300 home use one.
I use my machine for work too, all it does is VDI into the firms server.
ok but prudie start the post with "This is for work though" - like she was replying to the discussion as the OP.
I was answering the couple of posts above me. I don't get why the weirdness, Piggynose said it's supplied by her OH's employer. The fact we don't need machines like that at home may be a given but is irrelevant to the OP. The employer supplies the machine and will select the spec that's required surely?
