We`ve all seen the scenarios that can develop out on the road and the sometimes unusual but safe solutions we adapt to to get through them but can code ever be subtle and adaptive to deal with the needs of every road user even if they are sober, drug free or not suffering from an excess of testosterone.
We do not need perfection; all we need is for computers to be safer drivers than humans. They won't be drunk, drugged, speeding, playing with a smart phone, daydreaming, getting uptight with an idiot cutting them up etc. Of course there will be situations where they get it wrong but less often than humans.
Yes, we desperately need them because that would remove the incompetents.
Not to mention speeding, road rage, those busy with their mobiles, having lunch, smoking, etc, etc. The results are obvious daily.

How will they steer when the road markings are covered in snow?
I drive lorries with much of this technology fitted. Often the advanced emergency braking is switched off automatically because of snow or debris on the sensors. It often tells me I am out of lane because it mistakes road repairs for lane markings.

After driving for 59 years I would only trust myself.
What good are driving courses, after 59 years on the roads I know all I need to know.
My BIL was a driving instructor for 50 years and was the worst driver I have ever known.
As the old saying goes, those that can do, those that can't teach.
As I see it, the biggest problem with authorities accepting self-driving vehicles is the validation of the software.
There are accepted software standards that are used for safety critical applications such as the control of aircraft and other situations where the incorrect operation could cause loss of life/injury or significant damage. But vehicle self-driving software uses self-learning artificial intelligence principles and so the normal software standards cannot be applied.
Therefore acceptance will ultimately be based on proven reliability in real world situations. Already fully autonomous vehicles are operating on our roads – once they are shown to be many times better than humans at controlling vehicles they will be the norm.
As I have posted before on this site – I believe that before this century is out, most jurisdictions around the world will not permit humans to have control of vehicles on the roads (for obvious reasons).
