Assuming it's the same as Word, go to "Insert -> Reference -> Footnote", and you should be able to key in the reference at the base of the page. This has the advantage that the footnote will "follow" the text, should you end up moving it to another page.
Good luck!

I think you are talking about footnotes, that is, there is a superscripted number after a word and down the bottom of the page the number is repeated with the actual reference. Endnotes are the same thing except the numbers are repeated at the end of the document.
If so and you are using Word 2002 (or Word XP, same thing) then put the cursor after the word where you want to insert the number and then click on Insert (on the toolbar at the top), then Reference and then follow the instructions (pick the style, numbering etc) and click Insert. The cursor will move to the footnote (endnote) and you type your reference in. When finished just move the cursor back to the document body and continue typing. After the first one when the panel comes up just click Insert straight away, there is no need to fill it out again. You can type the entire document and then insert the references, you can also put them in in any order, Word will reorder them for you. For example, you have put in the references and then you find you have forgotten one, just insert it and Word will renumber all the references at the new one.
Other versions of Word or other word processing programs will have footnotes/endnotes as well, just check the help files to find out how you use them.
