Harvest Festival Goods

Every year my son's school request non perishable food to donate to harvest festival. So with my delivery i ordered a few extra items like pasta, pasta sauce, tined fruit and vegv etc.

I remember doing the same when I was at school and when I was in secondary (80s), we actually walked round to people's houses in pairs to deliver bags.

There isn't much detail on the school website but where do the goods usually go to these days? Maybe a food bank or elsewhere? Do 11+ kids go around delivering food packages?

Ours were taken to the Church for the Thanksgiving service and then distributed to those in need

I agree, a local church,village hall or other distribution point. I doubt children will be going door to door this year.

I remember my Grandma getting a food parcel delivered to her after Harvest Festival by some school kids. She was made up, bless her. Going back to the 90's here.

A school that I know donates everything to a local food bank.

When I worked for the homeless charity, a lot came to us. Both from schools and churches.
And yes...the children came round as a group with their teachers. It was lovely.
We also got a lot of fresh food. Some worthwhile, but way too many windfall apples.

I don't think I've ever tried a Fray Bentos pie! Are they any good?

The nearest food bank to me is about 4 miles away. Took some food there about a year ago. It's not easy to get to if you don't have a car. Not sure if buses go near there either.

One year I made loads of Bramble jelly, but the School would not take it because it was 'homemade'. It was their loss and the next year they got some tins of Spam. Apparently, food banks won't take home made stuff either. Ridiculous.

no ive never tried one either. However, tinned pie doesn't sound like something I really want to try.

I love a Fray Bentos pie, especially the mince and onion one. Quick, easy and tasty meal and very filling!

Marge, one elderly lady we delivered to when I was a kid tried to give us money. We obviously refused.

Foodbanks are not all that keen on tinned steak pies although they do take them. Went to a talk by our local one and it certainly made me think. If you are in need of a foodbank it is unlikely that you will have much (if any) spare cash. You need to heat your oven for at least half an hour before putting pie into oven then it takes another half an hour to cook. One hour's gas/electric which many can't afford.

Aww bless her, it's a wonder my Grandma didn't do that, I think it's a generation thing.

It puffs up bednobs and rises well above the tin. All I can say is that it is very tasty combined with the filling, makes a delicious meal with whatever veg. you want to put with it. I always keep a tin in for when I want something that doesn't take a lot of preparation. Like I say, the mince and onion is my favourite.

While it was a very thoughtful gesture on your part APG its not ridiculous. Foodbanks have to abide by health and safety (I know, I know) Sell by dates and all that (plus, if its home made, who knows what has gone into it?).
We have to get rid of any food that been opened....such as cereal, pasta etc, simply because we cant take that chance of it having been tampered with (there are some loons out there who would)
Still a fabulous gesture on your half though :-)
