Can you buy wifi security cameras that you can connect to your ‘own’ cloud, e.g. iCloud or Google, and so not pay monthly subscription fees?

Swann say you DO need both elements to work the camera. Never sure of 'chat' lines, but that's what they say. Maybe it'd be cheaper in the long run to stick to the Arlo, which doesn't seem to ask you to join other things (except their contracts, of course).

All I want is a camera!

You would need to check that you can turn the siren off and have it in silent mode
Another question - if your wifi signal strong at the place you want to mount the camera?

The Somfy’s £250, and I wouldn’t mind that for a camera/basestation, but it seems a bit much for ‘just’ a camera, as Arlos are around £115 for their ‘Essential’ on Amazon.

Wifi locations are no more than 7-ish metres from our Virgin router/hub, and we have no trouble with our ipads or router-only phones.

I’m revising my budget for £350/400 for the initial camera plus base station, as hopefully the basestation will be a one off!

But i do want to operate this through my ipad, and most seem phone centred.

One final-ish point before I splash out on a two-camera/basestation Arlo system - our smart phones are PAYG (no contracts, no www access outside our home router’s range) - does this complicate matters?

I’m assuming we can log on to Arlo through our iPads and complete setup that way, which is how we want to view camera’s views.
