Suddenly clammed up, couldn’t switch it off, just stuck on page, then screen went black and eventually I had to log on again with my password, all seems ok now. What could cause this please?

Probably just Gremlins causing mischief - nothing to worry about if your iPad is now working okay after Restart and Login.
Just double check that you have updated to the latest iOS Version 14.4.2 in the Settings > General > Software Update.
