Mobile Phone

I am first of all looking for a pay as you go mobile phone. Refurbished.

£10 on the old mobile phone does me for like 3 or 4 months cos I don't really use it.

However for facetime and perhaps texting I want to be able to hit the keypad only once to get a letter rather than with the Doro I have you have to press it 3 or 4 times to get a letter. any advice please and thanks

i thought you had to have an I phone if you want to do facetime, i could be wrong, perhaps someone could enlighten us.

Android users can join a Facetime session but can't host one - only iPhone/iPad users can do that.

sorry i am not sure, my friend has an i phone, she does use facetime i believe for work. also she video calls me on my samsung galaxy using whatsapp.

look sorry for this - but when I think of it I don't want Facetime. Just the quick touch of the keyboard if I have to send a message.

What happens when I phone my friend in Australia or in America on a landline and sometimes because friend thinks it is a scammer she doesn't pick up so after a few rings a voice comes on telling me she's not there and so I hang up. That costs me a £1 - even tho I haven't spoken one word.

So she has told me to text her that I am about to ring and then she'll know it is me. So that's what I basically want. At the mo I have that Doro thing and it takes ages to text.

PS - I probably wouldn't hear too well on Facetime as I wouldn't be able to lipread it well.

I think to get the kind of keypad that lets you text one letter at a time directly as you would on a tablet (rather than buttons on the front of the phone you have to press through the number to get the letters) you'd need to look for a cheap smartphone.

a last question - can you buy a smartphone with pay as you go or do you need to enter a contract?

Yes you can buy a smartphone as pay as you go. Buy from Amazon or anywhere SIM free

thanks Barry - wouldn't know about that. Also does unlocked mean anything.

Unlocked means you can use any SIM card from any network provider - it is not 'locked' to say EE; it means the same as 'SIM free'.

If you like the Doro brand this phone might suit you - it will have a full keyboard on the touch screen
