I have read many times that too many fonts can actually harm your computer - slow it down or cause real problems. Can anyone please tell me the safest method as some programs and web pages use them. Is it safe to use windows explorer to delete them - or just leave things as they are?

Just leave things as they are .. fonts used within websites should have no effect on your computer.
Start > Settings > Control Panel > Fonts Manage them as you will: having large numbers of fonts does indeed slow down your computer as they tend to use up more RAM, forcing other things onto Virtual Memory.
