I have bought a new PAYG phone - a more basic model.

I want to keep my old phone number. I have changed my phone before and managed to transfer the number to the new phone.

I am having a bad day and my brain has gone AWOL.

Do I put my old sim in my new phone and text SWAP from that?
Or do I use my old sim in my old phone and then text SWAP?

The problem is that I can't get my old phone to open - I don't want to risk damaging the phone if I don't have to open it.

What are you using to "swap"? I did this recently with a samsung, using smart switch. It should work a similar way. You have to have the swapping app on both phones, then put the sim and memory card (if there is one) in the new phone and then run swap on the new phone. If it works like smart switch it should tell you what to do from there.
am i missing something? i just put my sim card in a sim free mobile and i'm ready to go . . .
Yep, just put the SIM in and it's done. You only need to do anything more if you are changing network provider and want to keep your number.
Yes you can just put the old sim in the new phone but I got the impression that wolf63 also wants to move some content over from the old phone.

TTT, that sounds much too complicated. I just want to swap the number over to my new phone. I know that it is simple as I have done it before.

ael - I made the mistake of trying to follow the instructions. I want to keep my old number.

Last time that I did this I was told that I couldn't move the old sim into the new phone.

Thanks to both of you.
Ok then just put the old sim in the new phone. I was a bit confused about texting SWAP etc, what's that all about?
"Last time that I did this I was told that I couldn't move the old sim into the new phone. " - that's bow locks.
I mean whoever told you: "Last time that I did this I was told that I couldn't move the old sim into the new phone. " - was talking bow locks.
Put your old SIM in your new phone. Switch phone on. Send a text. Has it worked?
^^^ yes let us know, has it worked?
if wolf cant get her old phone open it's going to be a bit of a problem
What is the make and model of phone you are trying to open? Most of them do not open these days they have small drawer with the sim card in it that pings out with a paperclip.

I know 'how' to open the old phone, but it just won't open. It's an LG Joy.

I am going to forget about this until I feel more alert. I am prone to making simple issues turn into disasters when doing stuff without my brain powered up.

Thanks all
Just be aware that your new phone might take a different size SIM from your old one - SIMS have got smaller with time. If that is the case your network provided will give/sell you a replacement SIM which has the same number as your old one.
Why not take both to your local phone shop - either your provider or a phone fixer shop.

The LG Joy takes a micro SIM. Most modern phones take a nano SIM. If this is your situation you just need to go to you service provider and get them to swap the SIM for a smaller one. If both phones take the same size SIM, then as others have said, just pop it out of one and put it in the other. The SIM is effectively your phone number.
If the new 'phone takes a larger SIM than your current one, it might come with an adaptor to slot the current one into.

If no, I am sure a 'phone shop should be able to provide one and fit it for you.

My new phone is now up and running, or it will be once I work out how to send a text.

Thanks to all of you. I was a tad bewildered at the weekend.

Glad you're sorted, wolf. We all have those moments.
