Windows keeps closing down too soon, eg when I am just reading something on screen, and I have to log on again with my password.  I cant see anything relevant under Settings.  Under Power and Sleep it is set apparently to close down after 30mins. Any suggestions please?

go to sleep again and "up" the time, it goes up like 1 hour, 2hours etc, 5 hours, never.

Question Author

Thanks.  But it is closing down after a matter of a few mins!

It could be overheating. Not sure what you can do if that is the case.

when you say "closing down" do you mean turning right off? Or just that the screen locks and the PW box comes up?

Question Author

Sorry, dont know what PW box means?  The laptop is only 2 years old.

After 1-2 mins of no movement on screen, the screen goes black, if I move mouse immediately it comes on again, but any longer I need to reenter password , it then reverts to wherever I was originally.

I have set Power and Sleep to 'Never' but makes no difference.

I would prefer not to have to put in a password anyway, as noone else uses the laptop and I rarely take it out of the house.

Any suggestions welcome and thanks.

Dolly. If you know how to get to power and sleep you can do this. Go to settings again   ...   The windows key on the keyboard or the winnows icon boyttom left of your screem.
Then in the pop up menu choose the "settings" cog wheel.
In the new menu choose "Personalisation".
In the left side menu choose "Lock Screen".
Then click on "screen timeout settings".

In the box saying "when plugged in turn off"  ...  choose never.
In the box saying "When plugged in pc goes to sleep after" ...  choose say 3 hours.(That is a sensible timeout.)

You may not get the changes until you have done a reboot.

Who else has a winnows icon at the bottom of a sceam? Bleedin autocorrect. 😖

PW = Password Box, do what Togo said.

Question Author

Thanks, will give that a go, Togo.  What exactly do you mean by a 'reboot', is this simply closing down and restarting?

Thanks again for everyone's advice.

Close down and restart Dolly.

reboot means turn completely off and on, start - power - restart :-will shut down and reboot.

Instead of clicking 'shut down' click 'restart'

It will then do exactly that; shut down & then restart - it often corrects minor problems. If it doesn't we'll try something else.

Question Author

Sorry,  have tried as suggested,   (have selected 'Never' and 30 mins,  turned off and restarted ) but it is still the same,  needing to enter my Windows password to continue.   I have Windows 10, dont know if that matters.  Have not taken up the option to update to Windows 11.

Any other ideas or do I need to take it to a computer repair shop for them to look at it??

I didn't say 30 mins Dolly. I said 3 hours.

dolly---- do you run your laptop from a battery or a plug? Check in settings to see if you are selecting the right closing down time.

Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options. Under "Require sign-in", set it to never.

Question Author

Thanks Radagast, checked and it is already set to Never.

I use the laptop plugged in, rarely just on battery.

Try changing  to  shorter times just to see what happens . If it still closes like before then it looks like the repair shop.

Question Author

Thanks,  looks as if I will have to take it in.  It is working, although having to keep entering my password is a nuisance.

Thanks to you all for your advices.
