Deleting files and folders

I have XP Home---with folders, some empty, that I cannot delete!, when I try a window opens saying access denied they are being used by some other program or person. How can this be with an empty folder ?. Does anyone know how i can delete these folders and files please?

i hav had the same prob still looking into it, i hav a few currupt files, that say the same thing, when i find out ill let u know ok,
