'G' in corner of mobile phone!

I have a 'G' in the top corner of my nokia 6230. sometimes its just a 'G' sometimes its a 'G' with a line through it. Does anyone know what this is, and how to get rid of it.

the G stands for GPRS (mobile internet) - go to your internet setting in the phone menu to turn it off.
