I've just noticed this icon has appeared on my taskbar courtesy of my teenage son. I have tons of confidential reports on my PC - should I get Limewire taken off asap?

If I were you I would spend 200 on another computer for him and keep him well away from your PC if you use it for work with confidential information.

I am not sure Limewire is a problem, but other things he downloads may be. And if it is a laptop you take into work and plug in their network they are not going to be too happy if you have a virus on your laptop.

If you can only have the one PC then stop him being able to access your files and download and install software.

If you are using Windows XP then set up two user accounts.

Set your one with a password and give it administrator authority.

Set his one with no password, but give it only user authority.

This is fairly easy to do, let us know if you want more details.

we had limewire recently and my computer has been playing me up ever since. I would suggest you get rid of it becasue it is, after all, file sharing.
With limewire or any other file sharing program, you instruct it which folders and files you want to share. Others don't have full access to every file on your PC by default, only the bits that you want to share.
Limewire and others like it are notorious for spreading viruses so either way I'd uninstall it.

Also, if it's a laptop, I would agree with vehelpfulguy. There's no way that you should be using that on your employer's network and for home use as you can easily compromise the security of your employer's systems
I have had no trouble at all with Limewire. It will be set to a particular folder which is to be "shared" not everything on your computer. Open Limewire and select tools/options you can find out from there which is the shared folder.
I'd agree with what vehelpfulguy's said.

As a final thought, if your work is really important, then consider encrpyting it (so no-one but yourself can read the things, even if someone else does get hold of it), and also make sure you back it all up! Free encryption software can be downloaded here: http://www.gpg4win.org/

Thanks for those replies - really very helpful. It's not a laptop and I don't need to take it into work but nonetheless I've uninstalled Limewire and will organise an account for my son. Thanks fo3nix for that info which I'll be looking into also :-)
I would like to say, Kazaa Platinum is the best free music/movies download library that exist today. Membership is very reasonable, they provide fresh tracks each month and they're more than happy to work with you and help you Set it up on your PC. Unlike other free Music download companies, Kazaa Platinum gives you the freedom to re-arrange the music tracks and use them in any way you want. What more could you ask for? http://www.kazaa-platinum.com is the way to go.
