saving files in windows xp

Please can any body help?

I have a database file that I would like to save on C.D. But each time I try it turns itself into a read only file. It's fine when it goes to that bit 'files waiting to be copied' but as soon as it goes to the disk I can't change anything. When I used my lovely windows 98 I could open and save to the disk no problem, none of this waiting to be copied, it just saved to disk.

Any advice greatly appreciated as my computer knowledge 'muddle through and see what happens!'

Is the CD disc a CD-R (write once) or a CD-RW (re-writeable).

If it is a CD-R then all files on a CD-R become read-only because once a file is written to the CD you cannot change them.

Files on a CD-RW can be overwritten so I guess they do not become read-only (I do not use CD-RW so cannot be sure).

It's a CD RW - In the properties before I save it the file the read only is not ticked but when I save it, the read only is ticked and I can't untick it.

What type of database file is it, Microsoft Access ?

What operating system are you using ?

What process do you use to actually save it ?

Do other types of files become read-only when saved to the same CD ?

It XP media edition, works database, I've tried "send to" and "save as" It's done it on all the files I've tried to save.

I can work on it no problem if I keep saving to computer.

On windows 98 you save straight to the disk, none of this cd's waiting to save to disk. Can this function be turned off?

When you copy files to a CD/RW you are using packet writing, but it seems XP does not support packet writing on a CD/RW.

Seems you need a third party product such as Nero or Roxio.

If you have a new PC with Windows Media Center Edition then you may have had this supplied with the PC.

I've got Roxio. It needed me to format the disk so I'm just doing it now. Thanks for the other info I've had a quick look at it. (I'll have a better look tonight when the kids have gone to bed and arn't whinning in my ear!!!)

Thank you so much for your help. It was very easy in the end. It can now be accessed and saved from and to the disk and don't have to keep accessing the Roxio file. For someone who hasn't done it before you've been a fantasic help.
