I'd be slightly surprised if it needed a driver given you have XP. Try and look for one at the manufacturer's website though.

What do you mean by not working? Do the lights come on, does the draw open and close? And if you right-click my computer, click properties, then click the 'device manager' button, does it show your drive with a little question mark or exclamation mark by it?

Yes the drawer does open and the lights come on but there does not seem to be enough power.According to My Computer it says that the device is working properly.
It is very unlikely that you need a driver especially as you infer that the device manager says there are no problems. It is more likely that you need a new CD player. I got a DVD burner from eBay for about 23 so they are not expensive.

ok - many thanks
Yeah, agreed, sounds like the drive has gone to join the great junk yard in the sky. Ooops... I suppose that should be the great recycling plant these days.
What happens when you try and read a disc?

If XP says that the device is working correctly, then it sounds like a possible fault with the unit itself that XP is not detecting.

When I put a cd in nothing appears on the screen at all.
And can you read the contents in 'my computer' ?

Question Author
No,nothing appears in My Computer
Then as the above say, either it's not connected right (though this is strange if it appears in device manager), or it's a dud.

Many thanks to you all - looks like I have got to spend some more money !!!!
